H2 vs Kangen alkaline water — 2026 technical comparison (PEM vs ionization)

Paul Fournier

Two Technologies, Two Approaches, Two Results — The Technical Details

"What's the difference between your hydrogenated water and Kangen alkaline water?" — this is the #1 technical question our customer service receives. The answer deserves a full article, because the two product families are regularly confused — even by health media that should know better.

Ionized alkaline water (a category where Kangen Water™ is the most well-known commercial name, owned by Enagic since 1974) and water enriched with molecular hydrogen by PEM electrolysis are different technologies, different concentrations, different measured parameters, and different scientific bases. Here's an honest comparison.

1. Summary Table

Product Form Under-sink appliance 4-7 kg Portable bottle 500 mL
New Price €2,500 to €5,800 €279

By-products Rejected acidic water (pH 4-5) — 50% of volume None — O₂ vented
Dedicated Peer-Reviewed Studies Low (oral pH effect controversial) 320+ on molecular H₂

2. The Fundamental Misunderstanding About pH

The central claim of alkaline water is that it "alkalinizes the body." This idea is based on a mistaken reading of human physiology. Here are the facts:

  • Blood pH is buffered at 7.35 — 7.45 by the renal and respiratory systems. It only varies by a few hundredths — any variation outside this range is a medical emergency (acidosis or alkalosis).
  • Gastric pH is between 1.5 and 3.5. Any ingested water, alkaline or not, is immediately neutralized by gastric hydrochloric acid.
  • Urinary pH naturally varies between 4.5 and 8 depending on diet — it is a reflection, not a therapeutic goal.

The idea that one can "alkalinize" the body by drinking water with a pH of 9.5 is not supported by classical physiology. Research on the real clinical benefit of oral pH remains controversial and weakly replicated.

This doesn't mean alkaline water is "without interest" — some studies suggest an effect on gastric reflux, blood viscosity, or kidney stones. But these benefits, if they exist, are not due to alkalinity itself — they are often due to the dissolved molecular hydrogen fraction generated as a byproduct of the ionization process.

3. The Little-Communicated Secret of Alkaline Water: H₂ is What Acts

This is the point that specialized researchers (notably the Ohta team at Nippon Medical School) have highlighted since 2007. The therapeutic effect observed in studies on ionized alkaline water is probably not due to alkalinity — it is due to the amount of molecular H₂ that incidentally forms at the cathode during ionization.

Problem: alkaline ionizers generate H₂ unpredictably. The concentration varies depending on:

  • The conductivity of the input water
  • The temperature
  • The flow rate
  • The chosen pH setting
  • The age of the electrodes (used Kangen sold: worn electrodes = collapsed H₂)

Result: a typical Kangen water bottle can contain 200 to 1,200 PPB of H₂ — often closer to 500 PPB than the therapeutic thresholds studied (minimum 1,200 — 1,600 PPB in clinical trials).

4. Why PEM Electrolysis is Technically Superior for H₂ Production

PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysis was originally developed for space fuel cells. It uses a solid polymer membrane that selectively allows protons (H+) to pass through but blocks other ions and gases.

Technical advantages:

  • Purity of produced gas: H₂ at > 99.99%, no contamination by ozone, chlorine or other by-products
  • Very high and stable H₂ concentration: 8,000 to 12,000 PPB possible depending on design
  • No dependence on water quality for yield (even distilled water is usable)
  • No acidic water rejected — no waste
  • No added salt, electrolyte, or chemicals

This is why serious industrial hydrogen producers (Japan, Korea, France) have migrated to PEM since 2015. Alkaline ionization remains legitimate for its proponents as an alkalinization technology, but it is technically obsolete for the production of dissolved H₂.

5. The Subject of Measurement: pH vs. DPD

Measuring pH is trivial — colored strip, 5 seconds. This is why Kangen sellers always emphasize the pH demonstration (tap water at pH 7.2 vs. Kangen water at pH 9.5, clear visual contrast).

Measuring the dissolved H₂ concentration is much more difficult. Two methods exist:

  1. DPD method (N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine) — reference from the Center for Hydrogen Research, method published in Analytical Sciences. Precision ± 5%. Field measurement compatible.
  2. Gas chromatography — absolute laboratory method. Precision ± 1%. Not practical outside the lab.

At HYDROGENYX, each ELITE 9K batch is validated at the factory using the DPD H2Blue® reagent (global standard). This allows us to honestly state 9,000 PPB. A brand that announces an H₂ concentration without mentioning its measurement method is providing unverifiable data.

7. Customer Testimonials Post-Kangen → HYDROGENYX Migration

"I had a Kangen SD501 for 4 years, €4,200 at the time. Good results but heavy, fixed, maintenance cost me €300/year. I tried HYDROGENYX out of curiosity — the DPD H₂ concentration is significantly higher and I can take it to the office. I won't go back to the ionizer."

— Dr. Frédéric M., osteopath (verified)

"As a former Kangen distributor, I eventually understood that what worked in their water was H₂ — not pH. Once that piece of the puzzle was in place, switching to PEM was obvious."

— Sandrine V., naturopath (verified)

8. Cases Where Alkaline Water Remains Relevant

To be honest, ionized alkaline water can still be beneficial if you are specifically looking for:

  • Unlimited flow at home for cooking, tea, coffee (e.g., restaurant/very large family)
  • Punctual acid compensation after documented gastric reflux (under medical validation)
  • A fixed solution integrated into kitchen plumbing

However, if the primary goal is selective antioxidation by molecular H₂ — as supported by the 320+ available scientific publications — dedicated PEM electrolysis is the best technology available today.

Technical FAQ

"Can I combine Kangen + ELITE 9K?"

Technically yes, but the benefit is small. The H₂ concentration achieved by PEM makes the Kangen contribution redundant for this goal. If you already have an ionizer in place, keep it for cooking/family use and use the ELITE 9K for targeted protocols.

"Is the water from my ELITE 9K also alkaline?"

No. The pH remains neutral (7.0 — 7.5 depending on input water). This is physico-chemically normal: PEM electrolysis does not separate anode/cathode in the same container, so there is no pH effect.

"If the pH is not alkaline, is it still effective?"

The efficacy documented in scientific literature concerns dissolved molecular H₂, regardless of pH. See the 320+ studies published since 2007.
